Two contenders for the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party appeared on NHK on Sunday, stressing their intention to prioritize the increased autonomy of local governnments and the economy.
LDP Policy Research Council Chairman Fumio Kishida argued for his "digital garden city state concept" to narrow the gap between urban and rural areas through the introduction of online medical and educational services.
"We need to create unique cities in rural areas and consider the division of roles between the central and local governments," said Kishida, 63.
On economic policy, he said achieving a "rebound in demand will be difficult for the time being [due to the spread of the novel coronavirus]. We must protect our livelihoods and businesses by providing adequate fiscal and financial support."
Based on his experience as a past minister in charge of regional revitalization, former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba said: "[Transferring authority and financial resources] to local governments will also reduce the burden on Tokyo. Many things should be entrusted to local governments,"
Ishiba, 63, also stressed the need to create an economy centered on domestic demand. "The higher the incomes of low-income people, the more consumption is stimulated," he said.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, 71, has also announced his candidacy for LDP president. He canceled his appearance on the same program due to the need to respond to Typhoon No. 10.
