2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-65 in NW Indiana

Indiana State Police investigate the wreckage of a crash that killed two people Nov. 10, 2019, on Interstate 65 in Crown Point, Indiana. | Indiana State Police

Two people were killed Sunday when a wrong-way driver slammed into another vehicle on Interstate 65 in Crown Point, Indiana.

A 21-year-old woman driving a 2015 Kia entered the southbound lanes of I-65 about 1:35 a.m. from the wrong ramp at U.S. 231, Indiana State Police said. About a minute later, she crashed head-on into a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette as she drove the wrong way in the center lane.

The driver of the Corvette was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The woman, who was from Beaverville, Illinois, was taken to Franciscan Health in Crown Point, where she succumbed to her injuries.

A male passenger in the Corvette was also hospitalized at Franciscan Health, police said. He is expected to survive.

Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash, police said.

All southbound lanes of I-65 were closed at mile marker 247 for nearly seven hours as state police investigated. The expressway was reopened about 8:30 a.m.
