At least five people were shot — two of them fatally — Thursday in citywide gun violence, including a 29-year-old man who was killed Austin on the West Side.
Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert about 12:40 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Thomas Street and found Jonathan Washington unresponsive with multiple gunshots wounds to the head and upper body, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Washington was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He lived in Austin.
In the evening, a man was shot to death in Roseland on the South Side.
The 37-year-old was on a sidewalk about 6:30 p.m. in the 10500 block of South Wabash Avenue when two people approached him, police said. One of the pair pulled out a gun and unleashed gunfire.
The man was hit once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A few minutes earlier, a man was wounded in a drive-by in Back of the Yards on the South Side.
He was on a sidewalk about 6:25 p.m. in the 5200 block of South Loomis Boulevard when a Dodge Caravan approached and someone inside fired shots, striking the 29-year-old once in the thigh and grazing him in the ankle, police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
About an hour and a half before that shooting, a man and a woman were shot in Fuller Park.
They were in a vehicle about 5 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Wells Street when someone in a Chevy approached and opened fire, police said. The woman, 18, was hit in the underarm area while the 25-year-old man was struck in the abdomen.
Both were able to take themselves to the University of Chicago Medical Center where the man was listed in critical condition, and the woman’s condition was stabilized.
On Wednesday, two people were killed and three were wounded in shootings across Chicago.
