1 dead, 1 critically hurt in Englewood fire

A 36-year-old man died and another person was in critical condition after a fire displaced seven people Wednesday in Englewood on the South Side.

The blaze was reported about 9:30 p.m. at an apartment building in the 5600 block of South Bishop Street, Chicago police said.

A 36-year-old man suffered severe smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Randy Williams by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An 80-year-old woman also suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

Seven people from the apartment building were displaced.

The cause of the fired remained under investigation.
