2 wounded in city shootings

June 04--A man and a teenager have been wounded in separate shootings since Wednesday evening on the West and Southwest sides.

Most recently, a 24-year-old was in critical condition after being shot around 1:45 a.m. Thursday near Leif Ericson Scholastic Academy in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, according to police.

The 24-year-old was outside in the 3600 block of West Fifth Avenue with two other men when the shooting happened, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

During an argument, one of the two men pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking the 24-year-old in the chest, Gaines said. The attackers then fled the scene.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Gaines said.

At the crime scene, about two dozen police officers shone flashlights on the street and in the park west of the school, searching for shell casings and other evidence of the shooting.

Officers blocked off about a block of West Fifth Avenue, west of South Millard Avenue.

Residents in a three-story red-brick building on Fifth Avenue across from the park stood outside and peeked out of their windows, watching police officers.

Around 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, a 16-year-old boy was shot while riding a bicycle in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The boy was on a bicycle in the 6700 block of South Artesian Avenue around 9:25 p.m. when he heard gunshots and realized he was shot, Alfaro said.

The boy was wounded in the right thigh and was taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital, Alfaro said.

No one was in custody as a result of the shootings, and no other information was immediately available.
