A pair of tourists in their 60s fell to their deaths while hiking in a popular area of Arches National Park in Utah.
A 30-year-old man was also injured in the fall, which occurred amid wet and slick conditions Friday morning, Arches National Park Chief Ranger Scott Brown said.
Authorities responded to the bowl area under the popular Delicate Arch around 7:30 a.m., the Grand County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered a 60-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man dead from their injuries.
The younger victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. His condition is unknown at this time.
All three individuals, who authorities believe are related, were visiting the area from California.
Brown told KSL-TV the cause of the deadly fall is still under investigation, but noted a wintry mix of rain and snow on the trail when the incident occurred.
Arches National Park, known for its more than 2,000 stone arches, closed down Delicate Arch but reopened it about six hours later. The natural attraction is a "widely recognized symbol of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geological features in the world," according the National Park Service website.
