Merit-making rites and candlelit vigils will be held to mark the anniversaries of the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Oct 13 and of King Chulalongkorn on Oct 23, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

The late King Bhumibol passed away at age 88 on Oct 13, 2016, followed by a year of mourning in Thailand when civil servants wore black attire. King Chulalongkorn died in 1910.

Special ceremonies will take place on those two dates. In the morning, a merit-making rite will be performed and wreaths laid in front of the statues of the two kings. In the evening, a candlelit vigil will be held, said PM's Office permanent secretary Patcharaporn Inseeyong.

There will also be 89 seconds of silence observed on the evening of Oct 13, reflecting the late King being in his 89th year when he passed.

On Oct 23, 57 seconds of silence will be observed for King Chulalongkorn to mark the number of years the monarch lived.

From Oct 12-23 the government will host public merit-making events to pay homage to the two former monarchs, Ms Patcharaporn said.
