Two people died in a three-car, chain-reaction crash Tuesday night in Wheeling in the northwest suburbs.
A westbound vehicle on Lake-Cook Road rear-ended another about 7:40 p.m. at Northgate Parkway, Wheeling police said in a statement.
The second car then hit a third car, pushing it to the tree line, police said. Responding officers found one of the first two cars on fire.
One driver, 49-year-old Brenda Felix Soria of Inverness, was taken to Glenbrook Hospital and pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A second driver, a man in his 60s, died at the scene, police said. His name has not been released.
The third driver was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. No other passengers were involved.
A section of Lake-Cook was closed until Wednesday morning for an investigation.
