CHICAGO — Someone opened fire on a group gathered outside in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago early Wednesday morning, hitting five victims, one fatally, said Chicago police, adding that another man died of a beating.

Shortly after 4:45 a.m. Central time, people were gathered outside in the 5600 block of Ada Street when someone began shooting, striking five victims, authorities said.

A 35-year-old man suffered a wound to the chest and was taken to UChicago Medicine, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Another man, 23, was in critical condition at UChicago after he suffered wounds to the abdomen, authorities said.

Also taken to UChicago was a man, 27, for a leg wound and a woman, 21, who was shot in the thigh and her condition stabilized, authorities said.

A fifth man, 29, who was shot in the left leg and left foot, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, authorities said.

A sixth man suffered injuries to the head after a battery, and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said.

No one was in custody for the deadly shootings or battery. Detectives were investigating.
