3 dead, 9 wounded in city shootings

Sept. 07--Two women and a man were killed and at least nine others wounded in shootings across the South and West sides Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to police.

Most recently, a 20-year-old woman was shot dead about 7:45 a.m. Sunday in the 7200 block of South Green Street in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A 34-year-old man was also wounded in the leg in the shooting and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition, police said. No one is in custody, and Area South detectives are investigating.

Earlier, a 20-year-old woman was shot to death about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at an outdoor party in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side. She was found with a gunshot wound to her head and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

She was later identified as Shaquandra Ratliff, of the 6000 block of South Morgan Street in Chicago, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The scene turned hectic just after the shooting. At one point, 20 or so mostly young men moved north on Cottage Grove while fighting as police tried to break up and disperse the group. One young man was taken into custody.

The ambulance carrying the woman drove over plastic cups that had littered the alley just east of Cottage Grove, where the woman was shot.

Another shooting left one man dead and another wounded on the Near West Side. Two men, both 23, were shot about 2:30 a.m. Sunday outside City Winery near the corner of Randolph Street and Racine Avenue on the Near West Side. Police found shell casings a little east of that intersection and the two men on Racine a little north of the intersection.

One was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The other was shot in the shoulder area and taken to the same hospital, police said.
