2 dead, 10 wounded in shootings

Aug. 22--Two people were killed and at least 10 others have been wounded since Friday afternoon in separate shootings across the city, officials said.

Most recently, a 34-year-old man was found shot to death around 4:53 a.m. Saturday in an alley in the 5200 block of South Menard Avenue in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

Police responded to call of a person shot and found the 34-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds, said Chicago Police Officer Bari Lemmon, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police.

The victim, whose name had not been made public, was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.

An 18-year-old man was shot to death and a 16-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting about 6:15 p.m. Friday on the 3800 block of West Lexington Street in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The 18-year-old, identified as Cory Fisher of the 3200 block of West Carroll Avenue in Chicago, was shot in the head and was taken in "grave" condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 6:24 p.m., according to Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Ron Gaines and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The 16-year-old suffered a wound to the shoulder and was in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Police said both victims were standing outside when they began arguing with an attacker who pulled out a gun and fired shots at them.

No one was in custody, and no other information was available about the shooting.

In other shootings:

--A 19-year-old man was wounded during a drive-by shooting around 3:40 a.m. Saturday in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on the Lower West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Sgt. Al Stinites.

The man was walking in the 2300 block of South Hoyne Avenue when a red pickup truck drove past and someone inside fired gunshots, striking him, Stinites said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Stinites said.

--About 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a 29-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side, Stinites said.

The woman told authorities she was standing in front of an abandoned house in the 8100 block of South Manistee Avenue when she heard noises on the side of the house, Stinites said. The woman went to investigate the gangway and find the source of the noises when an unknown person fired shots at her, Stinites said.

She was struck in the ankle and grazed in the arm. She was taken in good condition to South Shore Hospital.

--About 11:25 p.m. Friday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the foot in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Stinites said. The teen was in the 6400 block of South Mozart Street when he was shot, police said.

He was taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital. Police said the teen was being uncooperative, and no additional information about the shooting was available.

--About 10:50 p.m. Friday, a 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Stinites said. The man was driving a car in the 5100 block of South St. Louis Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he was hit in the wrist, Stinites said. The man was taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital, Stinites said.

--About 10:32 p.m. Friday, a 38-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Ron Gaines.

The man was sitting in a parked car in the 200 block of North Lockwood Avenue when he started arguing with a person who walked up to his car, Gaines said. The person fired shots, striking the man in the chest. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, Gaines said.

--About 10:07 p.m. Friday, a 29-year-old man was critically wounded when he was shot during a robbery in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said. The man was shot in the chest in an alley in the 10200 block of South Lowe Avenue, police said.

The man was in the alley when an attacker approached him and announced a robbery at gunpoint. The attacker robbed the man and fired gunshots, police said. It was not immediately known what was stolen, police said.

The man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and no other information was immediately available, police said.

--About 8:05 p.m. Friday, a 31-year-old man was shot during a possible robbery on the 7800 block of South Laflin Street in the city's Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man was wounded in the right arm and was taken to Advocate Christ, where his condition stabilized, said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Nicole Trainor. Police said an attacker shot the victim after an apparent robbery.

--Five minutes after the Laflin Street shooting, a 21-year-old woman was shot in the 8000 block of South Escanaba Avenue in the city's South Chicago neighborhood, Trainor said. The woman, who police said was not likely the intended target, was standing outside when she suffered a wound to her lower left leg. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where her condition stabilized, police said.

--Earlier Friday afternoon, a 21-year-old was shot about 3:15 p.m. on the 7700 block of South Shore Drive in the city's South Shore neighborhood. The victim suffered a wound to the hand and was taken to South Shore Hospital in good condition, Trainor said.

No one was in custody as a result of the shootings, and police were still investigating the incidents.
