3 dead, 10 wounded in separate shootings

July 12--Three men were shot to death and at least 10 other people were wounded since Friday evening across the city, police said.

A 23-year-old man died after he was shot in the head about 2:15 a.m. Saturday in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The man, identified as Tarvares Herron of the 5900 block of South Wabash Avenue, was in a car stopped at a stoplight in the 6900 block of South Lafayette Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer. The man began to talk to two females inside a black sedan stopped next to him, and a male in that car's back seat took out a gun and fired, Greer said.

The man was struck in the head and was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 3:39 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office and Greer.

The attacker fled east from the scene.

At the scene of the shooting, police officers blocked off the intersection of 69th and Lafayette with yellow and red police tape. A white van stood in the middle of the intersection with its driver's door open.

People driving through a McDonald's on the southwest corner of the intersection idled their cars for a few moments and stared at the crime scene before leaving the restaurant's parking lot.

About half a dozen friends and relatives of the man who was killed gathered by the tape at the south end of the crime scene.

A woman who said she was the sister of the slain man walked near the edge of the crime scene, shaking as she took in each breath.

"They have no sympathy," she said as she looked angrily at the police officers who were investigating the shooting in front of her.

As she kept walking along the south end of the scene, she stopped to talk to one police officer, who stood on the other side of the red tape.

"He's my brother," she said. The woman and the officer exchange glances and hugged.

"Thank you," the woman said. She then got inside a nearby parked car with several other relatives of the man and took off.

After the woman left, a group of three male relatives walked up to the police tape and said they witnessed the shooting. One of the men lifted the yellow tape, walked up to two officers and started explaining to them what he saw.

The two other men, who said they were the dead man's cousins, stood nearby and cursed at nearby officers.

"Where were you?" said a man with dreadlocks as he walked near the crime scene, swinging his arms.

Passing traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway just east of the crime scene deafened most of the chatter between the group of three men and the officers.

After several minutes, a detective asked the men for their contact information so the department could follow up with them as the investigation progresses. Only one man cooperated, police said.

"I'm trying to do my job," said the detective, addressing the man with dreadlocks who stood nearby. "Just talk."

The man walked away from the detective.

Earlier, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot about 11:10 p.m. Friday in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The 25-year-old was discovered with a gunshot wound to his chest in the 7500 block of South Langley Avenue. On the same block the previous day, a Chicago police officer had shot and killed Martice Milliner, 27, of the 9100 block of South Green Street, about 11:30 p.m. after responding to a call of a man in the area with a gun.

The 25-year-old was taken in critical condition to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:41 a.m. Saturday, police and the medical examiner's office said. He was identified as Kieth Cannon, according to family.

At the scene of the shooting, police officers blocked off about half a block of Langley between 75th and 76th streets. The 25-year-old's blood was smeared on the hood of a parked silver car inside the crime scene. Police said they found at least one shell casing at the scene.

Near the southern edge of the scene, two officers interviewed a female relative of the slain man.

Julien Landsey, who said he is the slain man's uncle, stood nearby and said he came to the scene after getting a call that his nephew was shot.

"Police come here," Landsey said. "But once they leave, it's back to normal."

As he stood talking near the scene of the shooting, Landsey's phone went off. It was the slain man's mother.

"He is dead," Landsey said softly. He held his phone away from his ear when screams came out of his cellphone speaker.

A few minutes later, Landsey and the other relative hurried away from the crime scene, got inside a nearby car and headed to Jackson Park Hospital.

Most recently, a man was killed and two other men were wounded in a shooting about 3:15 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of South Laramie Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.
