‘2 crimes in the span of 10 seconds is wild’: Tennessee woman uses joke on thrift store cashier. It backfires when she realizes she’s underage

A thrift store shopper shares the mortifying moment her go-to joke backfired after the cashier complimented her.

In a video with over 488,000 views, TikToker Annie (@uncleirohsneice) says she got into the habit of using the same response when another girl compliments her in public.

“They’re like, ‘You’re so pretty.’ And I’m like, ‘You’re so pretty. Should we kiss?’” she explains. So when the cashier at the thrift store called her pretty, she decided to use the same joke.

Why did the joke backfire?

“She looks at me and goes, ‘I’m 17,’” Annie recalls.

In that moment, Annie says she realizes the joke “wasn’t funny anymore.”

“I was baffled and I was like, ‘I shouldn’t have said that,’” she writes. “I grabbed my stuff and left.”

However, Annie says she turned around to see the cashier following her out of the store.

“She’s like, ‘You need to pay!’” Annie recounts. “I forgot to pay. Not only did I just harass her, but I also tried to steal. So that joke is over.”

Annie shares concerns that her mistake may be viewed as harassment. Soliciting a minor under age 17, even if one claims they weren’t aware of the person’s age, for sexual acts is a criminal offense in many states, according to Shouse Law Group

However, criminal defense lawyers on the forum Just Answer note that a one-time, unintentional joke made to a minor may not be illegal.

On the other hand, exiting a store without paying for merchandise can result in prosecution at the retailer’s discretion. According to Attorneys M. Qader A. Baig & Associates, a store may press charges or ask for a no-trespass order against the customer.

The Mary Sue reached out to Annie for further comment.

How did viewers react to the awkward moment?

In the comments, viewers joke about her nearly two-for-one “crime.”

“Not you almost catching 2 diff type of charges,” one writes.

“Almost caught two cases in one day,” another says.

“Breaking all kinds of laws [laughing emoji],” a third adds.

“When your cellmate asks you what you’re in for… I would only share half that story,” a fourth jokes.

Others share how they would react to the embarrassing moment.

“No, cuz id be on my deathbed 70+ years from now and this would still replay in my head if this happened to me,” a commenter says.

“This one of those ones gonna play in your head while trying to fall asleep,” another writes.

“I’m acc screaming rn. The way I would have DROPPED DEAD ON. THE. SPOT,” a third exclaims.
