2 cops among 6 hurt in communal clash in Gujrat town; 14 held

VADODARA: Six people including two policemen were injured in a communal clash that broke out post Saturday midnight in Borsad town of Anand district.

According to police officials, late on Saturday night there was a dispute between members of two communities over a path separating a Hanuman temple and a plot owned by members of minority community.

“The tipping point, however, was late night rumours that the police had apprehended two persons from the minority community for questioning. It was after these baseless rumours spread that a clash broke out. A police personnel who tried to intervene was attacked with knife,” said Anand district superintendent of police Ajit Rajian.

After heavy stone pelting, police lobbed 50 tear gas shells and 30 rubber bullets to disperse the mob. Around 14 persons were caught after the rioting.

“We have rounded up around 14 persons in connection to the riots. Also, we will be including sections 307 (attempt to murder), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) apart from other sections of the Indian Penal Code for unlawful assembly and rioting ,” Raijan said.

The constable and a head constable were shifted to SSG Hospital in Vadodara. “We have deployed two state reserve police force (SRPF) companies on rotation basis apart from local police to maintain law and order,” said Rajian, adding that the situation is under control now.
