Jan. 11--Two men have been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a teenager in the Brighton Park neighborhood late Thursday, according to a news release.
Sergio Gonzalez and Jose Juarez, both 20, have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing of a 17-year-old boy in the 1300 block of West 41st Place at about 10:25 p.m. Thursday.
Gonzalez and Juarez appeared in the Leighton Criminal Courts Building on Sunday where they were both ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to court records.
The boy has been identified as David Gonzalez, of the 3100 block of West 41st Place, who was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital a few minutes later, at 10:57 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, the office said.
Shortly after the shooting, police tried to stop their vehicle about 11 blocks away, authorities said.
When it crashed in the 3200 block of South Oakley Avenue, the two got out of the car and began to flee. At least one was armed with a handgun, police said. Officers pursued them and took them into custody.
Police said earlier this week that at least one police officer opened fire during that incident, but no injuries were reported.
In addition to the murder charge, Juarez has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member.
Gonzalez, of the 3300 block of South Oakley Avenue, and Juarez, of suburban North Riverside, are expected to appear in court Sunday.
