Jan. 18--Two men are facing felony charges after one drunkenly crashed a car with a stash of marijuana into a retention pond on Saturday night in Beach Park, according to the Lake County sheriff's office.
Deputies were called around 10 p.m. to the 12600 block of West Wakefield Drive, where they found a 1997 Dodge Stratus stranded in a nearby pond.
Deputies learned that only one of the two men in the car was on the scene. Deputies later caught a second man, James D. Poe, 23, of the 40800 block of North Forest View Road in Wadsworth, as he attempted to run away, the sheriff's office said.
A canine unit was called and found marijuana with packaging believed to be for distribution along with an undisclosed amount of money, authorities said.
The driver, Devon S. Leedom, 20, of the 6400 block of 127th Street in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., has been charged with unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to distribute, driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver's license and underage consumption of alcohol, authorities said.
The passenger, Poe, also was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in addition to obstructing a peace officer, authorities said.
