A judge on Wednesday ordered a man and a woman held in jail while they face murder charges in the shooting death of a single mother in southwest suburban Worth — just blocks from the police station.
Jonnie Angel Klein, 31, had just driven to an ATM at a Chase bank branch at 6838 W. 111th St., Saturday afternoon when a spray-painted Lexus pulled up next to her about 3:35 p.m., Worth Police said in a statement.
Surveillance footage showed Tamara Jailynn Johnson, 22, and Jason Jerry Joseph Johnson, 23, getting out of the Lexus, according to police. Tamara Johnson allegedly could be seen approaching Klein’s car with a gun before a struggle ensued between the two women.
Seconds later, Klein started to drive away, but almost immediately she slowed down and stopped on 111th Street.
Tamara and Jason Johnson jumped back into their car and drove off, police said.
A witness pulled over to check on Klein and called 911. Klein had suffered a gunshot wound to her chest and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead.
Police found a .45-caliber shell casing in Klein’s car, along with a receipt from her ATM withdrawal.
The ATM was just three blocks from the Worth Police Department.
Tamara and Jason Johnson were arrested Sunday after police in suburban Posen identified their car, police said. While searching the Lexus, officers allegedly found the clothing used in the shooting and a gun matching the shell casing in Klein’s car.
Tamara and Jason Johnson are related to one another, police said, but the nature of the relationship was not clear on Wednesday.
The two are charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court Wednesday, where a judge ordered them detained until their next court appearance Nov. 28.
Klein’s family said she leaves behind her 14-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter and was the sole caretaker of her mother.
