2,777 PU students affected by poor evaluation over three years

A total of 2,777 students, who appeared in second PUC examination over the last three years, were affected by inefficient evaluation, the data placed by the Government before the Legislative Council on Monday showed.

A break-up of the data showed that in 2019, 1,008 students saw their answer sheets had an increase by at least six marks while 66 students received six marks or less after revaluation. In 2020, the number of students receiving more than six marks after revaluation was 1,540, while 124 students saw the scoresheet go down by six marks or less. In 2021, when examination was not held but marks were declared on the basis of earlier performance, 31 students received six marks or more after revaluation and eight students received six marks or less.

BJP member S.V. Sankanur, who raised the issue on behalf of his party colleague N. Ravikumar, said that though the rule prohibited inviting teachers who had three or less years of experience to evaluation, it had been violated, and that the Government was not collecting fines from erring teachers.

As per the written information provided by the Government, during 2018-2019 no fines were levied on teachers and a fine of ₹100 per teacher had been levied on four teachers in 2019-2020. In 2020-2021 again, no fine had been collected. “From 2021-2022, five will be collected,” the reply said.

Acknowledging that there were errors in evaluation answer scripts, Primary and Secondary Education Minister B.C. Nagesh said that he would convene a meeting of MLCs and officials to find solution to ensure that such things do not repeat.
