£2.6 million to make one of Leeds' most deprived neighbourhoods more eco-friendly

The government have confirmed an extra £2.6 million will be handed over to make rows of Victorian terraces in south Leeds more eco-friendly.

The announcement, revealed today as part of a wider £52.6 million package for West Yorkshire, will see homes in Holbeck upgraded with modern technology - more than 100 years after they were first built.

Holbeck is among the most deprived areas of the entire country, with many people in the area living in back-to-back terraced houses.

However, the Holbeck Phase 2 Victorian Terrace Retrofit scheme will attempt to make homes more environmentally friendly to reduce energy costs.

The project also aims to tackle anti-social behaviour, improve access to jobs and education and create up to 30 jobs for local traders and builders.

Several other major developments will go ahead across the city too, with the government's Getting Building Fund to inject £900 million into construction programmes in the UK.

A futuristic-looking bridge will be built over the River Aire to link Leeds train station with a giant new green space, which will become the UK's largest new city centre park once complete.

£7.4 million has also been committed towards the expansion of the Temple Green Park and Ride, while £500,000 will be spent on building new cycle and pedestrian routes along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Cllr Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding as it will allow us to press ahead with three shovel-ready schemes in Leeds. These are all projects that will help reduce our city’s carbon impact and help the economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Securing this funding shows how quickly the council and the city can respond when the right financial support becomes available.”
