2,560 new Covid cases, fewest this year

The country registered 2,560 new Covid-19 cases, the fewest this year, and 34 more fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced on Thursday morning.

The coronavirus-related fatalities were slightly higher, but new infections dropped sharply from the 4,563 announced on Wednesday morning.

However, the figures in Thursday's bulletin did not include 4,387 positive results from antigen tests over the previous 24 hours. This would raise the total to 6,947.

As of Wednesday, a total of 36,192 people were receiving Covid-19 treatment (down from 39,271 on the previous day), including 15,614 in hospitals (down from 16,191). Among the remainder 2,746 were in field hospitals/hospitel facilities (down from 2,937) and 17,603 in home/community isolation (down from 19,903).

Of those in hospital, 846 were seriously ill patients with lung inflammation (down from 850) and 417 dependent on ventilators (up from 414).

The 24-hour period also saw 5,605 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering.

“The numbers of seriously ill patients and those dependent on ventilators have obviously dropped… However, as business activities increasingly resume, new infections may rise to a certain extent,” CCSA spokeswoman Sumanee Watcharasin said in her afternoon briefing at Government House.

According to the CCSA, the 34 people who died were aged from 38 to 95 years.

“As many as 53% of the new fatalities were either unvaccinated or received only one jab,” Dr Sumanee said.

The 2,560 new cases over the previous 24 hours consisted of 2,552 in the general population, six among prison inmates and two imported cases.

Of the new infections in the general population, 2,552 were confirmed at hospitals and none via mass testing.
