NEWCASTLE station will add a $2.3 million aerial ladder to its fire-fighting arsenal, giving crews access to the highest-reaching vehicle of its kind in Australia.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin joined Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter and Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott to make the announcement at Newcastle Fire Station on Wednesday.
Mr Elliott said the ladder platform will help firefighters reach new heights for rescues and to battle flames in tall buildings.
"It is critical firefighters based at the station have the best possible facilities and equipment to support their firefighting efforts so that the local community remains well protected," Mr Elliott said.
It follows a $930,000 upgrade for Newcastle station.
Commissioner Baxter said a similar upgrade at Minmi worth more than $500,000 would boost crews.
"An improved fire station and updated resources will ensure an improved emergency response for the Minmi area," Commissioner Baxter said.
"The new facilities will provide staff with the equipment and amenities necessary to help anyone, anywhere, anytime."
