2,086 new Covid cases confirmed by Public Health Scotland data as death toll rises by 19

A further 2,086 new Covid cases have been confirmed in Scotland as the nation's death toll from the virus increased by 19.

Figures have been published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland this afternoon as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 543 patients being treated in hospital which is up 28 from yesterday. There are currently 47 people with the disease being treated in ICU.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has risen by 90 to 22,834.

Of the new cases, 30 were from East Ayrshire and 30 were attributed to North Ayrshire. There were 29 new cases in South Ayrshire.

A total of 323,288 positive tests have now been recorded from 2.372 million tests carried out since the start of the pandemic.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Midlothian has the highest infection rate in the country – at 637.0 as of Wednesday, July 14.

The second-highest is Dundee City which has a rate of 514.3 while Angus (442.3) has the third-highest rate.

Locally, North Ayrshire's infection rate stands at 207.8 with East Ayrshire at 188.5. South Ayrshire's is 182.9.

Currently, 16 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 319.8.

Those 19 further deaths have been announced in the last 24 hours which means 7,791 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 10,220 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, July 11 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 128,530 as of last night.

There are 16 patients being treated for the disease in Ayrshire hospitals, which is up two on yesterday, and fewer than five in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 3,956,549 people have received the first dose of a Covid vaccine and 2,927,130 have received their second dose.
