'2,000 people and 36 flights' flew into Edinburgh Airport during the three days quarantine was lifted

Quarantine measures for people travelling between Scotland and Spain were lifted by the Scottish Government on Thursday 23 July and reimposed three days later on Sunday evening (26 July).

According to Edinburgh Airport, '2,000 passengers' arrived without quarantine from Spain during the three day period, reports Capital News Scotland.

Thirty-six flights from Spain and the Balearic and Canary Islands landed at Edinburgh Airport with no quarantine, including two flights from Barcelona where the bars, nightclubs and beach resorts were shut down once again recently due to a spike in cases.

It is also believed that 4,000 people travelled to Spanish airports from Edinburgh Airport in the time that the country was considered an airbridge.

Talking to STV news, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon defended the decision saying it wasn't "black and white".

She said: "I don’t think it was a mistake. These things aren’t entirely straightforward or black and white.

"When we added Spain to the exempt list and made that announcement about a week ago, the days that followed I was at pains to tell people that it was not set in stone for any country."
