The Australian women's national softball team arrived at Narita Airport on Tuesday morning ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The team will hold their training camp in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, until July 17.
This is the first time a team from overseas has entered Japan for the Games since the decision to postpone was made last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Cabinet Secretariat.
The group of 20 athletes and nine staff members appeared relaxed as they waved to the press at the airport. After everyone took an antigen test and received negative results, they took a charter bus to Ota a little after 10:30 a.m. -- about three hours after their arrival.
All the players are fully vaccinated, and their travel will be limited to their hotel and practice field, according to the Ota city government.
The team's first game will be against Japan's national team in Fukushima Prefecture on July 21. It will be the first event of the Tokyo Games.
