1st pets to test positive for coronavirus in Japan

Two dogs whose owners were infected with the novel coronavirus have also tested positive, it has been learned.

Tokyo-based pet insurance giant Anicom Holdings, Inc. reported Monday that the dogs were confirmed to be infected through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. The dogs' owners had entrusted Anicom Holdings with their care.

The dogs are the first pets in Japan to have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.

Anicom Holdings temporarily takes in pets whose owners are infected with the virus. It has been caring for the two dogs -- which came from separate households -- since late July. The company has conducted PCR tests several times, ultimately yielding positive results for the dogs.

The two dogs are currently separated from other pets, and one of them was negative in a later test.
