Kanagawa Prefecture announced Tuesday that variants of the coronavirus were detected in two men in the prefecture who died this month after being infected with the new coronavirus.
The deaths of the two men, one in his 70s and the other in his 50s, marks the first confirmed cases from coronavirus variants in Japan, according to the prefectural government.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases will conduct a genetic analysis of the two men, neither of whom had a history of staying overseas.
According to the announcement, the man in his 70s was hospitalized after being infected with the new coronavirus, and the variant was detected after he died; the man in his 50s was confirmed to have been infected with the new coronavirus after his death, after which the variant was found.
