£1m refurbishment turns former cotton mill in ‘poor state’ into office space

A refurbishment project has completed at a former cotton mill, turning it into office space.

The £1m revamp has seen a 8,800 sq ft office space created at the grade two-listed Chatham Mill on Chester Street, which was constructed in 1820.

Brand, digital and marketing agency WilsonCooke took 5,000 sq ft of space following the first phase of development last year.

The now-completed second phase, redesigning and re-purposing two buildings that formed an extension to the original mill, has created 3,800 sq ft of office space.

Manchester-headquartered Atelier MB undertook the project on behalf of property development firm Span Group.

Andrew Burns, managing director of Atelier MB, said: “The two buildings were in a poor state of repair before the latest stage of works commenced.

“The project was designed to enable the people now based there to truly appreciate this historic building in its raw form.”

Floor markings in one of the buildings, which was used as a warehouse and badminton court, have been retained along with the mill’s original features, Atelier MB said.

Mr Burns added: “It is now a modern, stimulating workspace which is full of character and an ideal base for exciting creative and digital businesses while still reflecting Manchester’s industrial past.”
