Indiana Jones, Dungeons and Dragons and 25 other films shot in the North East

Movie fans have been thrilled to see Hollywood filmmakers in the North East this week.

The latest instalment of the Indiana Jones series was being shot at Bamburgh Castle while Dungeons and Dragons, starring Star Trek's Chris Pine and The Fast and the Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez, was being filmed at Alnwick Castle.

And, during his stay here, Hollywood star Harrison Ford took time out to go cycling along the River Tyne and visit restaurants in North Shields and Newcastle.

But did you know that the North East has played host to many movie crews over the years?

Part of hard-hitting war film 1917, directed by Sam Mendes, was shot in our region.

Some of the river scenes were filmed at Low Force, an 18ft waterfall on the River Tees in County Durham, and other scenes were filmed at the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre, in Stockton-on-Tees.

The production team for Ken Loach's Sorry We Missed You was at the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead as well as Benwell, Byker and Newcastle City Centre.

I, Daniel Blake, also by Loach, was shot around Newcastle, while viewers will have spotted Beamish in County Durham in period drama Downton Abbey.

Meanwhile, Transformers: The Last Knight brought stars Mark Wahlberg and Sir Anthony Hopkins to Alnwick Castle when the movie's crew came to the North East in 2016. And who can forget Harry Potter?

Some of the industry’s biggest stars as well as home-grown actors have been here including Michael Caine, Kevin Costner, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Eccleston, Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Bean and a young Daniel Radcliffe.
