19-year-old woman killed by garbage truck in New York’s Queens; company expresses grief

A 19-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a garbage truck in Queens late Sunday night, police said.

The incident occurred just before midnight at the intersection of 62nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue in the Woodside neighbourhood.

The victim, identified as Nishat Jannat, was crossing 62nd Street in a marked crosswalk when a sanitation truck turned and hit her, according to the New York Police Department.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Jannat was declared dead on the spot.

Police said the truck was operated by Royal Waste Services. The 38-year-old woman driving the vehicle remained at the scene and was treated for minor injuries. No arrests have been made so far, officials said, adding that an investigation is ongoing.

Based on preliminary findings, authorities said the collision took place as the truck was making a turn into the crosswalk where the victim was walking.

In a statement, Royal Waste Services said it is cooperating fully with investigators. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred in Queens,” a company spokesperson said.

“On behalf of everyone at Royal Waste Services, we extend our most sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual involved,” the spokesperson added.

Officials said further details will be released as the probe progresses.
