19-year-old student creates Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Emblem!

The people of the United Kingdom are all set to celebrate the Queen's 70 years of reign in 2022. Queen Elizabeth II, who is now 95 years of age, is the longest serving monarch in the history of Britain, which is why her Platinum Jubilee makes for an extremely special occasion.

Buckingham Palace on Tuesday disclosed the official emblem that is to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year. The special design was created by a young 19-year-old graphic design student Edward Roberts, who won the competition run by the Victoria & Albert museum in collaboration with Buckingham Palace.

The chosen design will be featured on all the official Jubilee merchandise, websites, posters and more.

Roberts, who hails from Southwell in Nottinghamshire, expressed his elation and said, "It's just an amazing feeling to win it."

In respect to his win, he said that he "wanted to give a modern twist to the iconic elements of St. Edward's Crown, and so I created a continuous line, which I felt was a fitting representation of The Queen's reign."

What makes the design so special?

According to Paul Thompson, Vice-Chancellor of the Royal College of Art and one of the judging panel members, "This clean graphic design takes us on a simple line journey to create the crown and the number 70, beautifully capturing the continuous thread of Her Majesty The Queen's 70-year reign. Drawn on a computer, the ingenious emblem works across all scales and the flow of the line gives us a sense of a human touch behind the digital design process."

Professor Maria Lonsdale, Head of Leeds’ School of Design, where Roberts is a student, said, "We are thrilled that Edward’s beautiful, carefully designed and well thought through emblem has been chosen to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. His win is richly deserved and we are all very proud of him.”

When will the Queen's Platinum Jubilee be celebrated and how?

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be marked with a four-day Bank Holiday weekend in June 2022.

In a statement, the Buckingham Palace had earlier said, "The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on the Queen's 70 years of service."

"Beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories," it added.

A Thanksgiving service for the Queen's reign will be held at St Paul's Cathedral in London. A special live concert from Buckingham Palace is also scheduled to take place that will bring together big celebrities and stars to celebrate the most significant and joyous moments from the Queen's seven-decade reign.

Reportedly, the winner of the official emblem design, Edward Roberts has also been invited to attend the ceremony.
