At about 11pm, officers from Newcastle City Police Department assisted paramedics in pulling the man out of the water.
According to local police, the man ran into the water, and hit a sandbank head first when he dived in.
He was airlifted to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
Police are taking this time to remind those swimming at the beach to always take care around water and never swim at night.
