The blast from an explosion at a restaurant chain broke glass windows about 570 meters away in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, according to an interview on Friday. The fire department confirmed at least 184 buildings were damaged around the site of the accident.
The explosion, which occurred around 8:55 a.m. on Thursday, killed or injured 20 people. Hiroshi Furukawa, 50, a company employee from Taihaku Ward, Sendai, died from a pulmonary contusion. The explosion occurred almost as soon as Furukawa, who was there to renovate the restaurant, entered the building. The Fukushima prefectural police suspect the restaurant was filled with propane gas after it leaked Wednesday night.
About 570 meters east of the explosion, two glass windows at the entrance of the Fukushima Study Center of the Open University of Japan were broken.
"There was a loud bang, and the noise was very shocking," an official said.
飲食店が爆発し、１８４棟に被害
福島県郡山市の飲食チェーンで起きた爆発事故で、現場から約５７０メートル離れた場所でも爆風でガラスが破損していたことが金曜日、取材で分かった。消防は同日時点で、少なくとも事故現場の周辺の計１８４棟に被害が及んでいることを確認した。
爆発は木曜日の午前８時５５分頃に「しゃぶしゃぶ温野菜郡山新さくら通り店」で発生し、２０人が死傷した。改装工事のため店内にいた仙台市太白区、会社員古川寛さん（５０）が肺挫傷で亡くなった。古川さんが関係者用の出入り口から店内に入るのとほぼ同時に爆発した。福島県警は店で使っていたプロパンガスが水曜日の夜から漏れて、店内に充満していたと考えている。
現場から東に約５７０メートル離れた放送大学福島学習センターでは、入り口のガラス２枚が割れた。笹田浩司事務長（５９）は「ドンという爆発音がして、すごい衝撃だった」と振り返る。
