An 18-year-old student from Glastonbury, Connecticut has caused uproar and been arrested on suspicion of computer crimes after reportedly inserting a quote from Adolf Hitler into his high school yearbook.
The quotes were discovered in May, after the accused teen allegedly changed two of his fellow students’ quotes after hacking into the school database.
The teenager apparently used a quote attributed to the former Nazi dictator which reads: “It is a quite special secret pleasure how the people around us fail to realize what is really happening to them.” He credited George Floyd, the unarmed Black man killed by police in Minneapolis last year, with saying this quote.
Another student’s quote was changed to reference the Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and drugs.
The quotes weren’t discovered until the school began distributing the yearbooks to the graduating students, causing them to recall all the books and remove the quotes.
In a statement, the school administrators said: “We deeply regret not having caught the act of bigotry and vandalism before the yearbook was printed. We are examining and will revise our yearbook procedures for collecting and reviewing future student submissions.”
The teenager has been charged with two counts of computer crimes in the third degree and stands accused of unlawfully accessing the school’s database and changing the quotes prior to the book's publication. Bond was reportedly set at $5,000.
