18-year-old reported after Glasgow 'hit-and-run' incident as man in hospital

A teenager has been reported to prosecutors by police after he identified himself as the driver allegedly responsible for running down another man in Glasgow's Merchant City.

The 18-year-old made himself known to the police investigating the incident, which took place on High Street at around 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Police and multiple ambulances - including rapid response paramedics - rushed to the scene in Glasgow city centre and a cordon was put in place around a grey BMW, which investigators were seen examining.

Police subsequently confirmed a 36-year-old was taking to Glasgow's Royal Infirmary Hospital. His condition has not been disclosed.

It was alleged the driver of the car had fled the scene on foot after the collision occurred.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans, of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Helen Street police station, said: “Around 3.30pm on Saturday, 3 September, police were called to a report of a man struck by a car on High Street, Glasgow.

“Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances. The driver subsequently identified himself to police and an 18-year-old man will be reported for a motoring offence.

“The 36-year-old pedestrian has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"Anyone with information that may assist the investigation, including anyone with personal footage is asked to contact officers through 101 with reference 2130 of 3 September."
