18 things you only know if you grew up in Wirral

The Wirral - aka paradise peninsula. There's no place quite like it.

We're spoilt with beautiful beaches, incredible views and natural beauty such as red rocks at Thurstaston, the promenade in Hoylake and the woodlands of Grange Hill in West Kirby.

However, there are a few things that only people who grew up in Wirral understand.

From what we do in our day-to-day to how we identify ourselves among our Merseyside neighbours.

Here are a few you might recognise if you grew up in Wirral.

18. You often have to explain to people what a peninsula is

A peninsula is a piece of land almost surrounded by water.

The Wirral is even more impressive as it is surrounded by three bodies of water - the River Mersey, The River Dee and The Irish Sea.

Or we tell people it's  "that sticky out bit on the map."

17. We often say 'on the' Wirral' instead of 'in' Wirral

Is it because we're surrounded by water? Is it the shortened version of The Wirral Peninsula?

It's all very confusing.

16. Going for ice cream at Nicholls in Parkgate is the best way to spend a sunny day

Any piece of sunshine and you will see the whole of Wirral flocking to Nicholls in Parkgate for ice cream.

The ice cream parlour have been making their deliciousness for 75 years.

With glorious views of the Welsh mountains it's the place to be on a sunny day.

15. Feeding the ducks at Raby Mere is the main place to be to see feathered friends

Raby Mere is a hamlet on the peninsula and is the main place to be if you want to feed the ducks.

However, many of you will have horrid flashbacks of your parents clinging onto the backs of coats so you didn't go for a swim with the feathered creatures.

14. Train rides at Royden Park bring back special memories

Royden Park adjacent to Thurstaston Common has a secret for those not from the Wirral.

A steam powered passenger train.

As a child the locomotive left you feeling whimsical and gleeful, but as an adult just sadness as you realise you can barely fit in it.

13. Crabbing on the Marine Lake in West Kirby should be competitive sport

You know the best way to catch them - Persil net, bacon and your bucket.

But get ready for the fierce competition to see who catches the most.

12. When you try and explain to people on holiday where the Wirral is

Us: "It's in Merseyside."

Them: "I've never heard of it."

Us: "Near Liverpool."

Them: "Oh yeah, I know where Liverpool is."

Us: *eyeroll*

11. Being called a 'wool'

When we travel over to the city and let people know where we are from we are often brandished a 'wool'.

But we're Wirral and proud.

10. Or being called a Scouser by everyone apart from actual Scousers

This just gives us an identity complex.

9. Going to the Wirral show and how we miss it

In 2009 after 33 years the Wirral Show was closed to our devastation.

The huge two-day event in New Brighton was axed when organisers the Rotary Club of Wallasey and the Wallasey Lions Club pulled out.

It was one of the UK's biggest free-to-enter summer attractions that drew crowds of thousands from all over Merseyside and beyond.

With rides and entertainment galore, we miss our spending our summer overlooking the River Mersey while we scream with joy.

8. Actually knowing the difference between the Mersey tunnels

To some people not from our side of the water they are unsure where the Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnels lead to.

Us Wirralians have this down to a fine art and can tell you which one is best to use for where you want to go.

7. And their ability to ruin your day when they close

The queues, the queues! Spending up to an hour under water on what should be a five minute journey really ruins our day.

6. Going to the Wacky Warehouse at the weekend

Like Christmas and birthdays all rolled into one.

Running wild in the soft play, followed by colouring and pizza was the way to spend your weekends.

5. The horror of a taxi fare after a night out in Liverpool

If it wasn't expensive enough, the tunnel fare is enough to tip us over the edge.

But at least we can enjoy our McDonald's in peace in the back of the taxi.

4. Panicking that on your walk to Hilbre Island the tide will come in and you'll be stranded

You check and triple check that it's safe to make the walk over to the uninhabited island, but the fear still there.

However, it's well worth the travel when you take in the views of the Dee Estuary.

If you're lucky enough you might see some grey seals bobbing their heads.

3. Grammar schools are still a thing

Some people across the country are still in shock their around but 11 plus is still in place in Wirral.

2. Your go to claim to fame is often that Daniel Craig is from the Wirral

Hoylake to be precise and he went to Calday Grammar School.

1. Taking for granted all the beaches we have

We often forget about the beautiful beaches we have on paradise peninsula.

From West Kirby to Thurstaston and Hoylake, we really are spoilt for choice.
