18 more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus

Eighteen more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

NHS England has announced 331 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 22,049.

Of those, 54 occurred on May 5, 121 occurred on May 4 and 28 occurred on May 3.

The figures also show 28 of the new deaths took place on May 1 and May 2, 84 took place in April, while the remaining 16 deaths occurred in March, with the earliest on March 13.

In the North East, County Durham and Darlington reported seven more deaths while South Tees announced the second-most in the region with four.

County Durham and Darlington - 7

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 1

Northumbria - 3

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 2

Newcastle - 1

North Tees and Hartlepool - 0

South Tees - 4

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys - 0

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson returned to the House of Commons for the first time since falling ill and revealed that lockdown measures could be eased on Monday.

Mr Johnson will update the nation during a public address on Sunday before giving a statement to the House on Monday.
