18-month-old toddler killed by car on driveway in 'tragic accident'

A toddler has died after being struck by a car on a driveway in what police believe was a "tragic accident".

The 18-month-old boy was hit by the vehicle on the driveway of a house near Skibbereen in County Cork, in Ireland.

Police believe the incident occurred just after 5pm on Tuesday.

Gardaí, ambulances and the fire brigade all rushed to the scene.

The child sustained serious injuries and was brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The local coroner has been informed and an inquest will take place in due course.

Police have said they are investigating what happened and are treating the incident as a 'tragic accident.'

A Garda spokesperson said: "Shortly after 5pm on Tuesday, 25 January 2022, Gardaí from Skibbereen and Emergency Services attended at the scene of an incident near Skibbereen, Co Cork.

"A toddler (male 18 months) sustained serious injuries after being stuck by a car on the driveway of a house.

"He was taken from the scene by Ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he has since been pronounced dead. The local Coroner has been notified. Enquires are ongoing.

Paul Hayes, a local independent councillor for West Cork, has spoken of his sadness at hearing of the tragedy.

“It’s absolutely tragic,” he told the Irish Independent.

“Clearly it was an accident. As a parent myself I can’t comprehend what it must be like for the family and the driver as well.”

He added: “I offer my condolences.”

People have also offered their sympathy on social media.

One person wrote: "The poor baby and his family."
