A total of 18 former NBA players have been charged in a sweeping insurance fraud case involving the league’s health and welfare benefit plan, with a number of former Boston Celtics among them according to NBC News’ Tom Winter.
A further report from the Associated Press today relates that the players “engaged in a widespread scheme to defraud the plan by submitting false and fraudulent claims to get reimbursed for medical and dental expenses that were never actually incurred” between 2017 and 2020, with the defendants allegedly charging $3.9 million in non-existent services that they received $2.5 million of themselves.
Among the defendants named by Winter with ties to the Celtics include Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Tony Allen, Sebastian Telfair, Will Bynum, Darius Miles, Terrence Williams, and Milt Palacio.
According to the Associated Press, it remains unclear whether all have been arrested on the above charges.
