Eighteen cases of infection with the eta variant of the novel coronavirus, which has been detected in North America, Europe and elsewhere, were confirmed among travelers quarantined after arrival in Japan as of Sept. 3, according to a tally by the health ministry.
The eta variant was first detected in December. The World Health Organization classified it as a "variant of interest," the second highest level for alert, in March. The transmissibility of the variant is yet unknown, and the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry is working to gather relevant data.
Infections with the kappa variant, first found in India, have been confirmed in 19 cases in quarantine, according to the ministry.
