Visitors are coming back to Israel after a very long absence.

Below are 18 hotels in Tel Aviv-Jaffa to start you off. As anyone who’s been to the White City knows, there are hotels everywhere — 11,600 rooms in 181 hotels — in addition to many Airbnb rentals.

Thousands more rooms are planned in the next few years, with new properties such as the 880-room Sarona Hotel now under construction.

Let’s start off with two of the newest options.

This 52-room boutique hotel, opened in July 2021, was designed by Yoav Messer in homage to the 1950s-era I.L. Peretz Library and bookstore that once stood here as a center of Yiddish culture. The building itself resembles a stack of books. Inside, interior designer Yaron Tal installed old inkwells and a neon library sign in Yiddish. A huge typewriter hangs above the lobby’s Asian fusion restaurant, and even the rooms feature newspaper-printed wallpaper.

BEST HISTORIC HOTELS

Poli House

Poli House Hotel in Tel Aviv. (Assaf Pinchuk)

This 40-room boutique hotel originally was built in 1934 as an office building called Polishuk House. It housed the clandestine Etzel printing press during the British Mandate, and later the famous Naaley Pil (Elephant Shoes) children’s shoe store. After lying dormant and graffiti-covered for years, the building was painstakingly restored by Nitza Szmuk Architects and whimsically designed by Karim Rashid. Opened in 2016, Poli House is next to Carmel Market and the Nahalat Binyamin craft fair.

The Hardegg Jerusalem Hotel, built in the 1860s by John and George Drisco, was the region’s first luxury hotel. It later served as a British military headquarters and a shelter for World War II refugees. A $35 million investment and 10-year restoration project brought the hotel back to its former glory, and then some, in 2018. Situated in South Tel Aviv’s American-German Colony, The Drisco has 42 rooms, some offering views of the Mediterranean and others overlooking Jaffa or the hotel’s courtyard. A second historic building, a three-story wood structure renamed The Villa Drisco, has a five-room suite and Maine-style porches.
