17yo becomes latest to drown at popular holiday spot

A 38-year-old man drowned at Diamond Beach in March.

A 17-year-old male has drowned while swimming at an unpatrolled beach south of Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Emergency services were called to Diamond Beach near Hallidays Point about 1:00pm after reports that he got into trouble while swimming with his family who were holidaying from the Hunter region.

Police and paramedics pulled the teenager from the water and attempted to revive him but he died at the scene.

Acting Inspector Ben Atkinson said the drowning was a devastating start to the school holidays.

"It's sad to see visitors in our area getting in trouble and dying on our beaches."

He said a number of bystanders tried to rescue the 17-year-old but were unsuccessful.

Another member of the family was taken to the Manning Base Hospital in Taree, where the family is receiving support from grief counsellors.

Acting Inspector Atkinson said the waters at the beach were rough and made for dangerous swimming conditions.

"Our message would be the safest place to be is at a patrolled beach," he said.

"Swimming at a non-patrolled beach is an unnecessary risk."

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Six months earlier, a 38-year-old man drowned at the same beach.
