£179 oven and £41 a year fridge-freezer among greenest white goods awarded by Which?

An oven for £179 and a fridge- freezer costing just £41 a year to run are among the 60-plus appliances given an Eco Buy award.

The honours were given by consumer group Which? that rated white goods with the best green credentials.

Which? said more than half of consumers now considered sustainability important when they were buying and using household appliances.

It introduced the Eco Buy scheme last year to meet the demand for information on energy efficiency and because the difficulty and high cost of getting appliances repaired causes huge amounts of waste.

The group found many consumers assumed eco-friendly appliances would come at a premium cost.

But the Beko Aeroperfect electric oven is the cheapest Eco Buy product at just £179.

It costs just £44 a year, on average, to run, which is £16 cheaper than the most inefficient ovens.

The Blomberg double electric oven at £530 also earned an Eco Buy label.

Fridges and fridge-freezers are among the most expensive appliances, yet millions are thrown away each year.

Which? found there was a 10-year difference between the models with the shortest and longest lifespans.

As they run 24 hours a day, fridge-freezers consume a lot of electricity and can add up to £163 a year to energy bills.

But Which? said the £471 Eco Buy Liebherr fridge-freezer cost £41 a year to run, a saving of more than £120 on the most energy-hungry versions.

It also endorsed a £328 Hotpoint tall larder fridge.

Tumble-dryers increase your carbon footprint and add around £100 a year to energy bills.

As a result Which? changed how it tested and reviewed tumble dryers, and only the more energy-efficient heat pump dryers are eligible to be Eco Buys.

While heat-pump dryers tend to be more expensive, an Eco Buy Samsung tumble dryer, priced £599, only added £30 to energy bills a year, a £60 saving compared to condenser models.

The £649 AEG dryer is also an Eco Buy.

The Government is set to introduce new rules this summer that will require manufacturers to make spare parts for electrical items such as fridges and washing machines available, to help tackle premature obsolescence and reduce carbon emissions.

Michael Briggs, Head of Sustainability at Which?, said: “We know consumers want to reduce their carbon footprint and make more sustainable choices.

“That is why we are evolving the way we test products, factoring in how long they last and their energy efficiency, to help consumers reduce their environmental impact and save money.

“The Government is set to introduce new regulations this summer that will require manufacturers to make spare parts for some products available.

“These rules should be expanded to cover more appliances such as tumble dryers and ensure spare parts are available for the lifespan of each product.”
