Kirkby has produced a huge catalogue of talent over the decades, from world-champion athletes to stars on the big screen.
With a registered population of just over 50,000 in 2018, the Merseyside town has never been short of local legends.
From premier league footballers and famous soap stars to champion boxers and chart-topping bands, they all have a special connection to Kirkby.

1. Stephen Graham

Best known for his role as Andrew "combo" Gascoigne in This is England and its television sequels and as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire, Stephen Graham has a catalogue of critically acclaimed films and TV shows under his belt.
Raised in Kirkby, Stephen has been in Hollywood films such as Gangs of New York, Pirates of the Caribbean and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
He has also took on roles in television series, playing Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly in Little Boy Blue, as well as starring in Line of Duty and The Virtues.
2. Phil Thompson

LFC legend Phil Thompson caught the eye of Bill Shankly and signed to the Merseyside team in 1971.
He grew up near and attended Brookfield Comprehensive School in Bracknell Avenue, Kirkby, now called Kirkby High School, before going on to make 477 Liverpool appearances after his debut with the first team in 1972.
In 1981, Thommo captained Liverpool to their third European Cup win, beating Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris.
3. Sharon Maughan

Playing Tricia Williams in Holby City and appearing in the Nestle Gold Coffee Blend TV commercial are but a few things that have been part of Sharon Maughan's successful career.
Growing up in Kirkby, the actress and producer attended St Gregory's, an all-girls Catholic comprehensive, which later became All Saints Catholic High School.
At age 18, Sharon went on to pursue her acting ambition and attended RADA - and she never looked back.
4. John Conteh

Kirkby boxing legend John Conteh is one of the most celebrated talents of the town.
Gold medallist, British, European and World champion, Conteh reigned as WBC light-heavyweight champion from 1974 to 1978 and is widely regarded as one of the nation’s greatest boxers.
In 2017, he was also made an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
5. Tricia Penrose

Kirkby actress Trisha Penrose is well-known for her 18-year role as barmaid Gina Ward in ITV's Heartbeat.
She has appeared in other TV series such as The Royal and Coronation Street, as well as having a career in music.
Back in 2002, Tricia reached the final of A Song for Europe, a competition to select the entry for the UK's Eurovision Song Contest as well as making other singing appearances on TV.
6. Leighton Baines

Kirkby-born Leighton Baines arrived at Goodison from Wigan Athletic in 2007 and is now in his 13th season playing for the Blues.
The defender, who attended St Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School and All Saints Roman Catholic School, is Everton's leading scorer from the penalty spot in the Premier League era and has scored 38 times for the club.
7. Sean Styles

Liverpool has a long line of comedy talent and Kirkby's own Sean Styles in no exception.
Starting in 1986, Sean came in first in the Liverpool Pub Comedian of the Year award and has worked alongside some of the biggest names in the business.
He is currently presenting his own show on BBC Radio Merseyside.
8. and 9. China Crisis

Formed in Kirkby in 1979, post-punk band China Crisis found success in the UK and beyond with a string of popular hits.
Wishful Thinking, African and White and Christian are but a few of the great songs produced by the band, which was founded by Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon.
10. and 11. John Coleman and Jimmy Bell
Manager of Accrington Stanley John Coleman and Assistant Jimmy Bell, both from Kirkby, have worked wonders with the club over the past five years.
After the pairs return in 2014, the club has gone from strength to strength, even winning promotion in the 2014/15 season to League One for the first time.
12. Margi Clarke

For decades, actress and radio presenter Margi Clarke has been a familiar face on the small and big screen.
Starting out as a presenter for Granada, Margi has appeared in TV shows Brookside, Coronation Street, Casualty and Benidorm.
She is also well-known for her film roles in The Dressmaker, Letter to Brezhnev and Strike It Rich.
13. Steve Rotheram

Steve Rotheram was elected the first Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region in 2017 and leads the Combined Authority.
Born and raised in Kirkby, he ran his own building company after doing a bricklaying apprenticeship and leaving school with few formal qualifications.
In 2002, he began his political career and was elected to represent Fazakerley on Liverpool City Council.
14. Michelle Hinnigan

Former Everton FC Ladies captain Michelle Hinnigan, from Kirkby, made her first-team debut in 2007 and in 2014 became captain.
She also represented England at Under-17, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-23 levels.
15. Andrew Schofield
Kirkby-born actor Andrew Schofield has had a long career both on screen and on stage and has appeared in many Liverpool productions.
The first narrator when Blood Brothers first opened at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983, Andrew is also known for starring in biopic Sid and Nancy, playing John Lennon in Bob Eaton's Lennon and Smigger in Lost Soul at the Royal Court, Liverpool.
16. Jackie Harris

Councillor Jackie Harris has lived in Kirkby since 1954 and is the Mayor of Knowsley for 2019/20.
Growing up in the area, she attended St Joseph’s Primary School and then St Laurence’s Primary School, and went on to attend St Gregory’s Catholic Comprehensive High School, now known as All Saints Catholic High School.
From working at the Dickenson Factory in Kirkby to fostering dozens of children over nearly three decades, Jackie's public life began in 1993 when she was first elected as a councillor.
17. Paul Hodkinson

Local boxing hero Paul “Hoko” Hodkinson is known for his successful career as a British, European and World (WBC) featherweight title holder.
A former amateur champion, after turning professional he won the British title in 1988 and successfully defended it the same year.
A year later in 1989, he won the European title.
