20 photos which will transport you right back to Glasgow in 1990

It's hard to believe that we now find ourselves in May of 2021, a year that has a distinct 'Buck Rodgers' sound to it.

And to think as well that we are now over three decades beyond what was a truly seminar year in the recent history of Glasgow, 1990, when the city celebrated its status as the European Capital of Culture.

It was the year that Rab C Nesbitt was first broadcast on TV, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall opened and the Burns' Day Storm brought disruption as 140mph winds battered the city.

Concert-goers in the city were spoilt for choice with gigs to head to, with the likes of Frank Sinatra at Ibrox, The Rolling Stones at Hampden and Pavarotti at the SECC all taking place.

And there was also the small matter of One Big Day - when a quarter of a million fans packed out four stages across Glasgow in the biggest free concert ever to be held in Scotland.

Towards the end of 1990, Glasgow also saw prisoners, angry over poor conditions, demonstrate on the roof of Barlinnie Prison.

Have a look at the photos we've dug out the archives which show what Glasgow was like over 30 years ago.
