17 more coronavirus deaths at North East hospitals as UK total breaks 14,000

Seventeen more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

NHS England announced on Friday that 738 more patients had died after testing positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of hospital deaths to 13,134.

Of those 738 new deaths announced, 138 occurred on April 16, 320 occurred on April 15 and 109 occurred on April 14.

There were 154 deaths between April 1 and April 13 and the remaining 16 occurred in March, with the earliest new death taking place on March 21.

The Department of Health has confirmed that 14,576 have died across the UK after a rise of 847 on Friday.

The North East figure is down on the 66 deaths that were announced on Thursday.

Earlier on Friday, Britain was warned that it could face further waves of lockdowns and that it could have the highest number of deaths in Europe by the end of the pandemic.

Professor Anthony Costello, of University College London’s Institute for Global Health, told a committee of MPs that the “harsh reality” is that “we were too slow with a number of things”.
