Even when the weather is this warm, there's not much better than a fish supper on a Friday evening. Judging by the queues from plenty of the city's fish and chip shops it seems Bristolians agree.
Crispy battered fish, hot fluffy chips and lashings of salt and vinegar make the perfect end of week treat. We're spoilt for choice when it comes to good chippies in Bristol but that doesn't mean we can't pick our favourites.
There are some chip shops in the city which have become renowned for their high quality, but we know there are plenty more hidden gems we wouldn't be without dotted across Bristol. We've taken a look at the best but we would love to hear who you think should make the list.

A handful of the the places listed below are recognised in the National Federation of Fish Friers' (NFFF) prestigious guide, which is seen as the 'industry equivalent of the Michelin Star guide'.
Others are commonly voted the best and most popular. But who else should be on the list?

ClockTower Fish Bar

Located in the heart of Kingswood, locals love ClockTower for its huge portions and friendly service.
Salt & Malt
Address: Cargo 2, Gaol Ferry Steps, Bristol BS1 6WD
Expect to pay a little more at Wapping Wharf favourite Salt & Malt than you would at some other chippies, but the prices are definitely worth it.
Fish
Address: Welsh Back, Bristol BS1 4SB
Housed on a well-known Dutch barge moored on Welsh Back, previously home to fine dining restaurant Glassboat, Fish offers a menu of beer-battered fish and chips, seafood dishes and even mallet-cracking shellfish.
Mario's Fish Bar
Address: 1D Pool Rd, Sondwell, Bristol BS15 1XL
Mario's describes itself as a "traditional" fish and chip shop that "works hard to produce the best fish and chips and a selection of top quality and delicious foods".
Star Fish Bar
Address: 88 Bedminster Rd, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 5NP
Star Fish Bar is a favourite among Bedminster residents. One happy customer said "some of the best fish and chips I have ever had" in their Facebook review.
Clifton Village Fish Bar
Address: 4 Princess Victoria Street, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 4BP
The fish and chips at Clifton Village Fish Bar are consistently first-rate, but expect to pay a little more than at other places.
George's Fish and Chips
Address: 183 High St, Hanham, Bristol BS15 3RD
George's Fish & Chips was named among Fry Magazine's 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways in the UK in 2021 - the only shop in the Bristol area to make the cut.
The takeaway was visited by a mystery diner who praised the friendly service and said the batter encasing the "beautifully flaky" fish was "possibly the best I have ever had".

Pisces

Located in a prime position in the middle of Yate since 1958, Pisces is a friendly informal family-run business serving award-winning fish and chips, all freshly cooked to order.
Stoke Bishop Fish Bar
Address: 13 Druid Hill, Stoke Bishop, Bristol, BS9 1EW
Stoke Bishop Fish Bar is run by the same person who runs the Clifton Village Fish Bar, Marco, who has been involved in the fish and chip industry for his entire life.
Henbury Fryer

Henbury Fryer has been recognised and awarded for its high quality on numerous occasions over the years, so it's hardly surprising that there are many who regard it as one of the best chippies in Bristol.
Argus Fish Bar

You'll find proper traditional fish and chips at Argus, and that is why many people who live nearby have been visiting for years.
Bishopston Fish Bar
Address: 264 Gloucester Rd, Bishopston, Bristol BS7 8PB
Bishopston Fish Bar has won more awards than you've had hot dinners.
In May 2020, it was named as one of the best in the country by Fry Magazine, with owner Nick Lomvardos describing the accolade as a "great honour at this very difficult time".
Since opening almost 10 years ago the Gloucester Road chippie has built up a fantastic reputation, winning nearly 20 accolades in that time.
It is loved by many for its great quality, freshly-cooked food and friendly service.
