160-tonne steel bridge topples over crushing van near Glasgow Airport

A new pedestrian and cycle bridge being prepared to be lifted by cranes into place over Black Cart Water near Glasgow Airport has toppled over.

Images from the site show the 160-tonne, 100 metre-long steel bridge lying on its side after appearing to slip off and topple two six-wheel trailers that were used to transport it to the site.

A van also appears to be crushed underneath it.

According to Heart Scotland, site bosses say no-one was hurt and that an investigation is underway to establish what happened.

Engineers were set to install the purpose-built bridge using two cranes, with the complex process scheduled to take place at night when there are no scheduled flights at Glasgow Airport.

Set to open for public use in spring 2021, the crossing is situated on Greenock Road in Renfrew, and will provide a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the busy junction with Inchinnan Road.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Contractors at the Glasgow Airport Investment Area site have notified the Health and Safety Executive of an incident last night. No-one was injured and we are supporting the contractors as they assess the situation and consider the next steps.

“The junction of Abbotsinch Road, Greenock Road and Inchinnan Road is open as normal and will be closed overnight as scheduled each night from 8pm to 6am, re-opening 6am on Saturday 5 December.”
