£160,000 transformation planned for Stapleford play area will include multi-use games court

Improvements at a play area in Stapleford worth £160,000 are set to go ahead this month.

The Funding will go towards a transformation to remove the old and outdated play area at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground.

New, modern play equipment will be added suitable for a variety of ages, as well as a fully enclosed multi-use games court, to play both football and basketball.

First to be completed will be the multi-use court and an official opening will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 11am.

The play area is due to be completed a few weeks after this and a community event is being planned on the park to celebrate it.

The play area will also benefit from a rubber safety surface and new access gates.

A total of £93,000 has come from WRENs FCC Community Action Fund and another £67,000 has come from Broxtowe Borough Council's Pride in Parks scheme.

WREN is a not-for-profit business which awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The Pride in Parks scheme, set up in March 2018, is an approved investment of £500,000 from the council into Broxtowe's parks and open spaces split over two years.

Out of the £250,000, each year £125,000 is allocated to make improvements to council owned play areas which have been identified as high priority.

The other £125,000 is shared among the Town and Parish Councils who maintain their own parks to help improve their facilities.

The application for funding was made with Stapleford Town Football Club who are one of the main users of the park as well as The Stapleford Community Group.

The two organisations were involved with the community consultation which helped identify the need for a replacement multi-use games area.

The football club have also pledged £1,000 as a contribution towards the project.

A spokesman for Broxtowe Borough Council said: "We’re excited to see what local residents in Stapleford think of the newly refurbished Hickings Lane play area and games court later this month.

"This has been the most ambitious project in the council’s Pride in Parks Scheme so far and we cannot wait for the children of Stapleford to experience the new play area.

"We’d like to thank Stapleford Town Football Club and The Stapleford Community Group for their support in the bid for funding."

Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s local grant manager said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Hickings Lane Recreation Ground project and pleased that our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for young people in Stapleford.

"WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”
