16-year-old boy killed, man wounded in Gage Park shooting

A 16-year-old boy was killed and a man was wounded in a shooting Tuesday night in Gage Park on the Southwest Side.

The teen and a 20-year-old man were walking in the 5200 block of South Artesian Avenue when someone approached and opened fire about 10:10 p.m., Chicago police said.

Juan Chavez, 16, was struck multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived about a block away from where the shooting occured.

The man suffered three gunshot wounds to the back and was taken to the same hospital, where he was in critical condition, police said.

Police said the attacker was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

No arrests have been reported.
