16 ways to save money if you're a university student in Swansea

University can be one of the most interesting periods of our lives as young people learn to become adults.

But being a student can also come with its challenges, especially money issues.

There are several tips, however, which can help you to save money during your uni years in Swansea .

Here's a few:

1. If you take a bus to university, firstly, buy a student day ticket which is £3.50. Secondly, do not throw away the ticket as you can find a McDonalds deal for £1.99 on the back of your ticket.

2. Download the UNiDAYS app. You can get discounts on Nike, Adidas, New Look, JD, Superdrug, The Body Shop and many others.

3. Rent a property with your friend. In Swansea, one-bedroom flats are quite expensive for one person. Most of them do not include bills. However, there are some studios-all-bills-included.

4. The area where to rent a property is also important. The city centre will be more expensive than Uplands or Swansea Marina.

5. Moreover, when you plan to rent a property you can get a discount from your landlord if you pay in advance. For example, if you pay 6 full months in advance you can get a 5% discount, but it all depends on the landlord.

6. Don’t be scared to ask for a discount. If you want to install a broadband line in the flat you can face the problem of high installation fees. Do not hesitate to ask the engineer for a discount. You can reduce the price from £50 pounds to £10! Some broadband companies also have codes which help to reduce the price.

7. If you live in student property you can offer your neighbor to share the internet.

8. Swansea University offers student internships during the studying year and if you don’t have a car and a placement is far - you can visit the employability office in Singleton Park, Keir Hardie building. They may be able to cover your expenses, such as bus tickets.

9. The Gym in the centre of Swansea offers a LIVE IT membership which allows you to bring a friend up to 4 times per month. If your friends visit the gym don’t hesitate to ask them for the invitation.

11. If you don’t need the goods you bought before, don’t throw them away, you can sell them. Many students buy second-hand things.

12. Take cash only on nights out. It could seem strict but it works.

13. When you visit the doctors at University Health Centre Swansea and the doctor gives you the prescription - don’t forget to show it in the pharmacy, as then you get your medicines for free.

14. If you want to buy clothes online, for example, you can ask for free delivery to stores nearby with click & collect. Do not pay for home delivery.

15. Don’t buy water on the campus. You can find water coolers in cafes and the library. Just take a water bottle with you.

16. If you cannot live without a cup of coffee in the morning, go to Greggs. Hot drinks there are priced from £1.80, with a 20p discount if you use your reusable cup.
